2008-2009 ADMISSIONS PROCEDURES

 

Far Brook School seeks students from varied economic, racial, and religious backgrounds who are intellectually curious, serious about learning, self-motivated, and disciplined.

 

Attend Admissions Event – Prospective parents are invited to tour our campus and learn about Far Brook’s philosophy and curriculum.  Open Houses in the form of Mornings at Far Brook and Small Group Tours are available:

            For those who cannot attend any of the open house dates, an individual tour may be scheduled
            directly with the Admissions Office at (973) 379-3442.

Submit Application – Deadline: January 26, 2009 – After visiting Far Brook, parents may receive and
submit an application for admission along with the accompanying application fee of $100.

Schedule Screening or Testing – Once an application is received, the Admissions Office will call parents to schedule appropriate screening or testing.
                -- All Kindergarten applicants meet individually with a learning consultant for
                    a developmental screening.

                -- Applicants for Grades 1 through 7 are tested individually by Far Brook’s Learning
                    Consultant.  In addition to Far Brook testing, applicants for Grades 5, 6 and 7 may also
                    submit results from the ISEE, SSAT or CTP IV, taken within the last year.

Request Teacher Recommendations – Teacher recommendations are required for all grades.  Age appropriate forms may be found in the application along with a Confidential Information  Report Authorization form. Recommendations must be filled out by the applicant’s current teacher and sent directly to Far Brook.

Request School Records – Applicants for Grades 2 through 7 are required to submit a transcript from their current school.  A Release of Records form, found in the application packet, should be given to the current school requesting that school records be sent directly to Far Brook.

Submit Financial Aid Materials – Deadline: February 1, 2009 – Financial Aid materials must be requested at time of application.

Student Visit – Based on initial screening and space availability, applicants for Nursery, Kindergarten and First Grade may be invited to attend a scheduled playgroup with other applicants.  The Admissions Office will call parents to schedule playgroups as applicable. Applicants for Grades 2 through 7 may be invited to spend a full day at Far Brook with the class they would be joining. Playgroups and visits take place in January and February.

Notification – Parents will be notified of the Admissions Committee decision no later than March 10, 2009.
Candidates in our waiting pool may be offered spaces at anytime throughout the remainder of the school
year and into the summer. 

Financial Aid Financial Aid is awarded on the basis of need, taking into consideration the student’s academic promise and personal qualities.  Scholarships are funded from the operating budget as well as from special endowments created by generous family donations and earmarked for specific categories such as economic disadvantage and excellence in the arts.  Financial Aid materials may be requested on the application form.
