About the Film
Five orphaned children in Swaziland dive into their imaginations to create an original African tale about a girl on a dangerous quest. Their story, which is brought to life by magical animation, is interwoven with documentary scenes of the children’s lives in a group home on a Swazi farm; the result is a a genre-defying celebration of collective storytelling. The story is drawn from the children’s darkest memories and brightest dreams. Famed South African storyteller Gina Mhlophe encourages the children to envision a character and draw, write, and enact the adventure. The film shows that, although these children’s lives have been filled with trauma, their creativity and willingness to hope hasn’t been diminished.. In the words of one of the film’s directors, Aaron Kopp, "At its heart, the film is a meditation on the transformative power of storytelling — an ode to the creative spirit."
