Project-Based Learning in Junior High Math
Posted 02/15/2019 02:00PM

Far Brook's Junior High math students are often given project-based challenges to engage them and deepen their understanding and application of geometry, algebra, and other math concepts. Studies have shown that information learned through projects (project-based learning or PBL) is better retained and applied to new situations than information learned passively through lectures.

Students in one recent algebra class conducted an experiment, timing how long it takes to pass a bucket between a differing numbers of students. They then created a table of their results and plotted the data. They derived an equation to describe their experiment and used it to make a prediction if more students were included. In a follow-up class, students will test the accuracy of their model.

Creating and refining mathematical models of real-world events is a fundamental skill in engineering and other STEAM professions.
