Second Grade Explores the Vastness of Space
Posted 03/13/2019 02:00PM

How far is that? How big is that? In a lesson demonstrating scale and proportion, Second Grade is getting a sense of the mind-boggling vastness of space. Lower School science teacher Megan Gottlieb modeled relative distances in our solar system, using a tennis ball for the sun. The students learned that at this scale the size of the planets would be microscopic. The class then watched a video of a true scaled model of the planets and their orbits, which was built in the desert: the distance of the sun to Neptune was 3.5 miles and the Earth was just the size of a marble!
