Edwin (Eddie) Finckel Becomes Far Brook’s First Director of Music

Edwin (Eddie) Finckel was a well-known jazz musician and composer before coming to Far Brook as its first Director of Music in 1951. He established Far Brook’s deep connection to music and music education during his 39-year tenure (1951-1990), writing many of the songs that Far Brook students still sing to this day. The Finckel family were fixtures at Far Brook as Eddie’s wife Helen was the School’s secretary for many years and their son David ’67 was a student. Carrying on a wonderful musical legacy, David Finckel became a renowned professional cellist (Emerson String Quartet) who, with his wife, pianist Wu Han, performed and recorded his father’s composition for piano and cello Of Human Kindness.
