Winifred Moore, Founding Director

Winifred (Schwingel) Moore was appointed Director of the newly-founded Far Brook School. Growing up in Illinois and graduating from Wellesley College in 1921, Winifred was drawn to education.  She taught in the Illinois public schools and at the Avery Coonley School in Downers Grove, IL, before assuming leadership roles there and at the Lower Putney School in Vermont, and Lower Derby Academy in Hingham, MA. In 1944, she was hired by Ellen Geer Sangster to be the Director of Lower School of Buxton School, a position she held until she was asked to take over as Director of Far Brook. Winifred believed strongly that “the learning of the child had to be assimilated through some art form to make it part of his spirit” and that “If you take an idea and and explore with a child, he is capable of anything.” These convictions continue to influence learning at Far Brook today.
