Each year in preparation for their bountiful family feast just before Thanksgiving break, Third Grade learns about the food, music, and other customs that surround an authentic harvest festival of the woodland tribes.
Although this year’s feast was suddenly cancelled due to an unexpected November snowstorm, the Third Grade families still managed to capture the spirit of sharing and community of Native American harvest celebrations: they wrapped up all the food that was prepared for the feast and delivered it instead to Isaiah House in East Orange for local families to enjoy.
Two months after their cancelled feast, Third Grade and their families finally had an opportunity to gather together and celebrate in a “Gratitude Breakfast.” Students shared the music, dance, and poetry they had prepared for the feast, and as well as False Face Masks that were recently created as part of their study of healing rituals of the Haudenosaunee tribe.
